Question: Why do people start taking on an accent when they live in a different country for a while?

Not everyone does im of a weak mind so i no i would i guess its weather or not your of a persuasive personality if you are you will take on the accent quicker than someone of a stronger mind.
Supplement from 06/18/2006 11:11pm: Think of travellers they have a good mix going in there accents dont they where they move around the country alot.

I also have the same issue.. speak a combination of many accents. In my case I tend to copy the local accent (or that of the person I'm speaking to) as I find it aids better in communication. i.e. certain accents are faster and slower, the grammer changes slightly etc.
Others maintain their accent even though they live and work in different countries I think out of a preservation of identity.

I tend to pick up accents quite easily - even picking up stuff from just one conversation with someone.

I find that I also sometimes change accent depending on who I am talking to. When I speak to my friends in Hull I go back to my Yorkshire accent, whereas when I am talking to people down here (especially friends) I tend to adopt a rather severe southern accent (and unfortunately, tend to sound a little chavvy with it :( ). When I am at work and speaking to customers though, it is very difficult to tell where I am calling from as I have quite a distinctive telephone voice LOL.

I think it depends on the character of the speaker, someone who feels the need to be accepted, who doesnt want to stand out as different is, as I do, prone to adopt this chameleon-like ploy.
I have at various times been mistaken for australian, israeli, french, londoner, and west-country,whereas in fact I was born in Surrey, grew-up in Portsmouth, and have lived and worked in many different countries.

Like BB, my roots are in the North, (Cheshire) and when I go back it doesn't take long to pick up the local dialect. Having moved down south I had to change my accent and, consequently, my accent is pretty undefinable and, probably, like BB does, switch depending whom I am with and how I need to be viewed.

i don't have to live in the country, i just have to speak to someone with that country's accent, and it gets automatically printed on my linguistic motherboard. i've been thought to be various shades of american, canadian, scottish, shades of english, and very northern irish. i can flick unknowingly from one accent to the next within a conversation. it perplexes people somewhat... i find it rather amusing!

Since Joining the army 8 years ago I have picked up a bit of a strange "twang" I don't notice it really neither do the people in work(they don't even believe that I have) only people at home really I normally get "what's that f-cking English twang you got there?".
