Rayuela”, by the Argentine writer Julio Cortázar, is one of the most important literary works in the Spanish language in the 20th century. Situated in the mid-50s, the novel tells the adventures of Oliveira, a middle-class bohemian Argentine, first in his voluntary exile in Paris –where he meets a similarly bohemian Uruguayan girl, “la Maga” (“the magician”) and a group of artists and free-thinkers (the “club de la serpiente” or “snake club); and then in Buenos Aires, in company of his friends Talita and Traveler. Beyond the apparently conventional surface, however, the novel presents enormous complexity for at least two reasons: first, it is designed as an “anti-novel”, that challenges the conventional language and narrative structure of novels. Then, for example, it can be read following two different orders, presented at the beginning of the book: you can start either in chapter 1 or in chapter 73, following two completely different paths. Also, there is no linearity in the story told, but rather fragments in the lives of the characters, that the reader is supposed to put together –to some extent collaborating in the construction of that story (what Cortázar calls “lector cómplice” or “accomplice reader”). Second, as Cortázar himself once said, the novel –or anti-novel- is an attempt to put in literary form some of the big questions posed by philosophy in the twentieth century: Oliveira and his friends are constantly posing questions about the limits of human knowledge, the possibilities of communication through the art, or the ability of language to express human thought, just to name a few. The book makes fascinating reading, and it is still considered as one of the icons of the so-called “Latin American literary boom” of the sixties (it was first published in 1962).
