Would you discourage a friend considering investing in the Music industry?

The music will play on but has 'Pop eaten itself?' A bit late for me to consider a new career but I am hopeful for the industry that I have become a part of, and it part of me. It is very challenging however to find people 'crazy' enough to even consider investing in a start-up with a radical approach to 're-marketing' music, and reverse the decline. Pretty Broad question. There are a lot of ways to "invest" in the industry. The industry has been around a long time and of course, it's changing in a big way now. It may be worth investing in an area if you can reasonably forecast the technological interest in that area. What is the next medium that is going to cause people to want to use it immeasurably? Something like the revolutionizing of the industry with iTunes and the iPod. What is the next marketplace? Answer something like that and you may have your investment point.

Hi Robert, and thank you for your kind attention. You're aware I'm sure that the product itself, the music, has become very challenging to monetise, as an Entrepreneur yourself, if you heard of a Record Label that was making their whole catalogue ‘freely’ available for anyone to listen to, would you consider this approach ‘enlightened’ and buy shares, or incredulous and run away?

Well, there are a lot of "freemium" models. I wouldn't turn and run just because of the "free" attached. My initial question would be, 'if this is free, what are they actually selling?'. What is the business model of the label doing this? They have to make money too so there has to be something behind it. Once I find that out, I can then determine if investing is worth it for me.

The proposed model is a complete 'shake-up' of a traditional label approach. Principally, to change to a service provider rather than a ‘majority’ profit-driven overlord. All aspects of the management of an Artist’s career converted to a basis of fixed fees, instead of being reconciled by the revenues from music, merchandise, ticket sales etc. The Artist keeps all the money they generate but they pay for the services required to manage them. The decision to allow consumers to listen to the entire catalogue for free hopes to win ‘the hearts and minds’ of the younger generation, and make the piracy of our music largely unnecessary. The music becomes the ‘calling-card’ to the casual listener; the Artists create profit from all other areas when the listener evolves to a fan.The more successful an Artist becomes, the more they pay us to do more. Sound crazy?
