I would like to hear from Sales Leaders or Managers on the good and bad about sales training. What works and what doesn't work? Why? Whether it be traditional training, blended, or virtual; I would love to hear any and all feedback from the people it affects most.

The answer to your question is another question: What are the desired results? By clearly delineating the desired results helps to establish a benchmark so that one can use Kirkpatrick's third and fourth levels of evaluation. Possibly, a better question is "What works to ensure sustainable sales training? Many companies are looking for the quick fix and then within 6 months if not sooner the old behaviors come back. Interesting you posed this question and I discovered it after writing my blog today addressing this issue. Here is the link in case anyone is interested. Always appreciate feedback.

Raul, I have screwed up many sales training programs over my career. After all of the scars I will tell you some of the principles that are working for us now: 1) My management team teaches - nothing makes you learn content more than having to teach it. Nothing makes your team pay attention more than their boss serving as the teacher. We spend a ton of time investing in our sales managers so they can teach whatever skill we are building. 2) Destroy all PowerPoint presentations - we use a Learn, Practice, Do model where the sales team has to learn a play and pass a written/multiple choice test. Then they have to practice by engaging in live role plays in front of their peers and scored by their management team. Finally they have to 'do' a play live with a customer with their manager present. Me and my management team take the same test and do the same role plays. 3) Certification is mandatory - our sales team is required to go through certification; no exceptions. If you are not certified we will release you to the industry. 4) Ask what skills are necessary - at least half of our content for quarterly sales meeting is content requested by the sales team themselves. On the requested topics (not part of certification) the sales team teaches by sharing best practices None of this is easy, one of our star reps came up to me at our last quarterly meeting and said, "You know Alex we all cannot stand you when we see the prep package for the sales meeting, but after the meeting is over we know we have learned things we needed to learn" - So maybe the last part is to never apologize for making your team prepare.
