Worst Interviewing Mistakes?

US News & World Report recently published a list of 50 of the worst and most common mistakes job candidates make during interviews. These range from wearing sunglasses or a Bluetooth headset to bringing a friend -- or your mother! (See the entire list at http://bit.ly/50WorstInterviewMistakes.) What are the worst mistakes you've seen, from candidates OR interviewers?

I didn't witness this one but the British Guy who left the room and came back naked and announced to the candidate that this was a special stress test was pretty bad,I once asked a candidate to remove their headphones (which were blasting out music) and they told me that they wouldn't as it was proof they could multi-task.Another when asked what he knew about our company, threw a folder on the desk and shouted it's all in there. He'd printed out our website page by page but hadn't bothered to read it.When looking for someone to fill a very technical position, which the agent had assured us this candidate could do, I asked; "What systems would you implement within our current IT environment to move us forward with your plans?" to get; "It's amazing what can be done in Word nowadays." (Sadly he was serious).

I had a candidate, who was applying for a writing job, pull out a portfolio and show me a series of photographs of herself lying down with a very large snake -- and she was buck-naked. Suffice it to say, she didn't get the job.

Great topic Michael. One of the most humorous I've seen is someone trying to get a date with someone in the office and asking the interviewer about the person. On a more philosophical level I'd say one of the biggest mistakes people make is interviewing for positions that don't reflect their true interests.

True story. I wear my hair in a natural style. Had a candidate look me in the face, pull off her wig and say: "If I had known it was okay, I would not have purchased this for the interview". Gee, I said to myself, that's a person who does not know or appreciate who she really is, so how is she going to lead our technical department.

Michael, I came across this video created by GravityPeople a recruiting agency in the Bay Area. It gave me a good chuckle and it's highly relevant to your question.

I've had some memorable interviews over the years. These are a few of my favorites.
First, there was the candidate applying for a counseling position. When I gave him a role-play scenario of a client freaking out, he replied "I sure hope the training is long, because I'm not sure I'd know how to handle something like that." Strangely, he was surprised that he didn't get the job.I had a young woman who refused to fill out the application and was rude to the receptionist, but when I came out to talk to her, she was all sugar and cream. Then there was the guy with the guitar. He played it in the waiting room while he was waiting for the interview to start. And then when I asked him why he brought a guitar, of all things to keep himself busy, he broke it out and tried to play for me in my office. It was a telemarketing job.And then there was the temp warehouse worker who came to my office and admitted he was still drunk from partying in Vegas the night before and could he go rest and come back to work in the afternoon instead. As I tried to usher him out of the building he began hitting on me ("you're really beautiful, we should go out some time"). I wondered if it was a prank until the sales manager from the temp agecy came to appologise to me in person.
