I have recently began traveling, and have found it close to impossible to keep a travel journal but I am persevering for one reason. Journals can only enhance the experience of traveling.
Although the thought of sitting down in your hotel or hostel to write all the things that you have been doing may sound like a waste of time, it really isn't. Firstly, you do not have to write every tedious thing in your journal, just gloss over the less interesting parts. If you have sunbathed for three days and done little else, then just keep it brief.
A travel journal is a key to unlock your memories. Especially if you have been traveling for several months, and days blur into weeks. If you are journeying to various states or countries, locations and activities may blend. With a record of Who, What, When, and Why, those memories will never fade as you have something to remind you of the time you spent.
Travel journals are not only important to you. Then can be an asset to friends and family who are going to the same area. Instead of an impersonal guide, you will be able to give your friends actually place names. Without a journal, you may have a vague idea of places.
If you are able to keep a blog, that would be even better as it would be giving hints to travellers worldwide. It also gives your family and friends back at home a chance to keep up on what you are doing and gives them a flavor of the world that you are experiencing.
