can anyone recommend any weight training exercises for a beginner? im looking to build a little bit of muscle in my upper arms but mainly to tone up my whole body, especially my bottom and my thighs. thanks!

Stick with the basic muscle building exercises such as: Squats Deadlifts Lunges Bench Press Pull-ups Then ad some core exercises. That is all you need to do to build a balanced body. The leg exercises will actually help you build upper body muscle so don't skip them!

As a beginner I recommend you seriously look at the ChaLeanX DVD program. It has a variety of carefully guided but highly motivated workouts that tone upper, lower and core. I suggest if you are a beginner than you should do a conditioning phase first to prepare your body to weight training. Basically take a month where you do mainly body-weight exercises, like push ups, pull ups, dips, planks. This will help build your foundation. After that, you want to focus on compound exercises. There is an Excellent in home program called ChaLEAN Extreme. It is From Beachbody (the same company that created P90X). It is a Great Weight training and cardio balanced workout plan. It focused on building lean muscle and helps you learn about good form and the "right way" to resistance train. I highly recommend it. i use it myself and have lost about 35 pounds the 1st 90 days.
