Using vomiting to lower temperature?

I've never heard of this before and wondering if anyone can relate. My son is 2 years old and has had about 3 pretty high fevers in his lifetime. After a while of running the temperature, he throws up, and then all of a sudden his temperature disappears. This happened last night. He ran a temp all day (and has what I believe to be a cold, coughing and snuffly), it got worse at night, he threw up about 1am and then slept perfectly until 6.30am. He's still coughing and a bit lethargic, but is otherwise fine. Should I treat this like a gastro bug and not feed him, only give fluids? Or should he be fine? The way I'm seeing it, his body using vomiting to bring down the temperature, I've just never seen/heard of it before.

Re: Using vomiting to lower temperature?
i would go straight to your doctor. when high temperature is involved and vomiting it is always best especially with babies and young children to be seen by your doctor. this is just as a precaution so that a doctor can rule out possible causes and have a medical record. for example my son was vomiting and unknown to me he had tonsalitis. it turned out that he needed antibiotics for the infection in his throat as they were inflamed. that prevented him from ever having them out. if i hadnt taken him to the doctor there was a possibility that his condition over time would got to the point where they would to be taken out. there are various other conditions that accompany colds in little children. like a sore ear again that needs to be treated by a doctor. if left unattended it can cause complications. that also is accompanied by fever and colds. im not saying this is what your child has im just pointing out that only your doctor will be able to tell you. once you know by your doctor then the next time your little one gets it you as a mother will know at what point he needs your doctors help.
