2 year old with diarrhea

Hey,My 2 year old had one runny diaper each on thursday and friday, and has had two this morning already (it's 11:06 here). No mucus or blood in it. I haven't yet given him any anti-diarrhea medicine. He doesn't seem sick otherwise, though he does have a bit of a runny nose and has had for the last couple weeks.  He is still eating reasonably well and his diaper was very wet this morning so he doesn't seem to be dehydrated. He has his lower 2 year molars but not his uppers yet.  Could it be from teething? Just feeding him breads and the like today and giving him half-strength oj (as suggested by webmd). Anyone have experience with this?  What can I give him to make him more comfortable, and, how long should I let this continue before I take him in?

Re: 2 year old with diarrhea
I think if it keeps going and is getting worse then you need to see a dr.  There may be an underlying infection or upset somewhere.  The main concern is keeping fluids up - they can go without eating for a few days so long as their fluids are up.  Once they drop they can get very sick very quickly. My son has been to hospital a couple of times for dehydration following an infection (he refuses to eat or drink when he is sick).  They suggested watered down apple juice- 1/3 juice to 2/3 water (I'm surprised you were told orange juice as it is quite acidic, apple is much gentler), ice blocks, ice cubes, electrolyte drinks like gastrolyte (which you can also get as ice-blocks), flat lemonade.  They do need a bit of sugar/salt in the drink to help the body digest it once they are dehydrated, so if diarrhea keeps up water on its own is not much help. I hope that helps!

Re: 2 year old with diarrhea
Teething doesn't cause diarrhea directly. It is usually because children like to chew on things when they are teething so they become a little more receptive to bugs which can cause tummy upsets and changes in acidity levels which can cause nappy rash. When my children had gastro or simple tummy upsets, my doctor never gave any medication and it has always been my belief that it is better to let it run its natural course, as long as they keep their fluid levels up. I hope he gets better soon and if you are worried, it doesn't hurt to see the doctor.  The following things are what I found  helpful, Chicken broth with grated carrots and finely chopped potatoes Steamed chicken breast or fish with plain rice Banana's and grated apple A good yoghurt, natural set, diluted flat lemonade or gastrolite icypoles Dry toast with a bit of vegemite cup of warm tea with some honey and lemon, chammomile tea if they take it

The fact that he is eating reasonably well is a good sign. I would check his temperature - to make sure it fits with the guidlines. I strongly recommend taking him to your local g.p or pediatrition. This is the safest procortion and you will feel better after this, i garantee it! Your doctor will also be able to recommend or prescribe you with medication if need be. I hope this helps your little cherub feel better soon!

Re: 2 year old with diarrhea
When my eldest was younger she had gastro quite a bit and sometimes it seemed to happen when she had teeth coming through.. Because he has been doing this for a few days take him to the doctor we once had a doctor come out when our daughter was two her symptoms were diarrhea, and she became flat very quick but she was eating the doctor said it was the rotavirus not gastro and said she would be contagious for the next ten days. They can as you know become dehydrated so quickly keep up the fluids the hospital has said drink juice not watered down that was apple juice. I hope it settles down soon we have had this a few times thought it would pass but have ended up in hospital doing the the drinking recording every ten mintues so if they have diarrhea for more than a day or two we go to the doctors.
