Iron Supplements

(In Australia) Does anyone have any suggestions for good iron supplements?  I've been eating a good diet aimed at maximising iron absorption, and also taking a pregnancy multi, but my levels are slightly low.  I'm 24 weeks now, so I want to try and boost them a bit towards the end. In previous pregnancies, I tried Floradix, but always felt nauseous, and eventually stopped because I couldn't stand it, even with food. I understand that some forms of iron are better absorbed. Ta.

I have taken (CENOVIS womens Iron plus) get in suppermaeket its cheaper. It dosent say anythink on their about pregancy but check with your doctor when I had a blood test after my opp they said what your levels were ment to be and mine was 10 low they suggested iron supplements till I got my strenght back but told me to stop taking then when I was getting stomache aches if you dont eat enough fibre and drink enough water you may get constipated so eat more fibre and drink more water and they also said eat more meat. Hope all goes well and congratulation on number five.

Re: Iron Supplements
It may have been a cheat's way out for me, but after I really felt I had exhausted all other avenues foodwise, having a nice big glass of milo (with lots of milo) seemed to make a difference. While I was pregnant my obstetrician gave me a list of sources of iron - woman generally require around 12-16mg of iron a day. This may give you some indication of where it may come from.. Beef (2slices/120g) 3.6mg, Lamb (2slices/120g) 3.0mg, Sardines (5whole/75g) 2.0mg, Salmon or Tuna (150g) 2.6mg, Wholemeal Bread (2slices) 1.4mg, Lentils (1/2cup/100g) 2.2mg, Spinach (1/2cup/70g) 2.2mg, Baked beans (1/2cup/120g) 2.0mg but the surprise one for me was the Milo (1tablespoon/20g) 4.7mg !! Hope this helps :o) -Miranda-

Re: Iron Supplements
I am 29 weeks pregnant and tend to store iron very poorly, so in addition to my pregnancy vitamin I take Ferro Graduamet tabs (pharmacy only) as recommended by my Dr and Midwife. They should be testing your iron again soon so get them to tell you what they think- it is possible to OD on iron. In terms of supplementing your diet, while spinach etc has other health benefits you would have to eat a 1.5 kgs of it per day (mmmmm yummy) to get your DI of iron, plus the oxalic acid in spinach inhibits absorbsion. The best and most easily absorbed sources of iron are from lean red meat and very surprisingly (but luckily yummy) Milo- 1 cup of milo made with water and low fat/full fat (whichever you prefer) gives you half your DI of iron and is delicious also. Now how's that for a good Aussie solution ?

I agree with some of the PPs that consulting your doctor is probably the way to go.  Spinach is always great but if you are after a supplement, a health care professional of some kind is always a better one to talk to.  Even at the chemist, they can give pharmacy advice.  Let them know you are pregnant and what your levels are and what you're currently taking because there is such a thing as too much iron.

Re: Iron Supplements
I used ferro grad c, I didn't have to get a script for it, just had to go to chemist, there's 3 different ones, my doctor told me to get the red one, not sure what exactly it's called.  Try to take your iron tablets with some oraange juice or something with vitc as this helps the absorbtion process.  Don't take vitamins with coffee as caffine blocks it.  Remeber to up the fibre also as iron supplements can block you up.

Re: Iron Supplements
I was anaemic earlier in my pregnancy too and my doctor referred a good iron supplement to me as some can clash with other vitamins you're having. Take your multi-vitamin along to your next appointment and they will be able to help you more. I also upped my iron rich foods to make sure I didn't get constipated. If you like it, lean Kangaroo meat is an excellent one and good old spinach.

Re: Iron Supplements
Vitamin and supplements should be treated the same way as any standard medication; especially when you are pregnant.  Consult your doctor, naturopath or other health professional before taking anything.

Re: Iron Supplements
Iron is what make women sick when they take prenatal vitamin. So I don't know that you can avoid feeling nausea when you take any iron pills. But hopefully your pregnancy is different this time and you won't feel nausea with iron pills?
