What time is bed time for children in your house?

Just curious because in this house bed time is anywhere from 7pm to 8pm depending on the ages of the children.  I only have one of my own but had custody of 4 others for about 6 months while their mother sorted herself out and also have various children for various reasons.  Usually those under 8 have a 7pm bedtime, those from 8 to 12 have a 7:30 bedtime, and those over 12 have an 8pm bedtime on school nights.  Weekends and school holidays bed time can be stretched out by an hour or even more.  Miss 5 loves her routine and literally can only stay away until 7:30 at the latest, although prefers 7pm by far. I'm just in the house at the moment listening to the neighbours telling their kids (aged 5 to 14) to go to bed now they have school in the morning.  So I was just curious about bed time in other people's houses.  All kids are different and some need more sleep than others of course, and family routines differ from house to house.

Re: What time is bed time for children in your house?
Hi, I have 2 kids my 17mth old is always in bed by 7 where as my 3 1/2 year old  goes to bed at 8:30, but she also still has a day sleep ranging anywhere from 1 1/2hrs to 2 1/2hrs.  Untill I went back to work she was always in bed by 7 as well. i now don't get home at the earliest 6pm so geting them both feed, bathed and into be by 7 is not possible. So hence I am not will ing to get rid of her day sleep because of this. I must admit that when she went to bed at 7 she settled and sleept much better.

Re: What time is bed time for children in your house?
Bed time in our house is 8pm for our oldest (8) on Friday and Saturday she can go to bed at 8.30 (she absolutely loves this arrangement as she gets to watch the end of So You Think You Can Dance on friday night she also has more time to snuggle with us or play board games on these later nights (this is her time with us).  Our youngest (7mths) has a very good sleeping routine she starts getting sleepy around 6 after shes had her dinner at 6.30 we give her a bottle and she's down for the count and sleeps until 7am the next morning...as she gets older she will have a 7pm bedtime until she is 7 and then depending on how she goes she can move up to an 8pm bedtime by this time her older sister will have an 8.30 school nights and 9pm Friday / Saturday bedtime. This may not work for everyone but it works for us the girls are not grumpy in the morning and seem to handle it ok, however if they (mainly being my oldest didn't handle the times then changes would be made). Keep smiling all Beth

Re: What time is bed time for children in your house?
Our 18 month old boy was going to sleep around 7 or 7:30pm until recently when it started staying light longer in the evenings.  If he went to bed around 7pm, he would wake up in the mornings around 7am.  Now he is going to bed around 8 or 8:30pm but sleeping until 8 or 9am.  Having that extra time in the morning to get stuff done around the house and for my job (I work at home) is really nice!  I think I will keep his bed time around 8 or 8:30pm since he sleeps in later :)  Plus, my husband enjoys having an extra hour to hang out with him after work in the evenings... it is a win-win bed time!

Re: What time is bed time for children in your house?
My little ones (2 & 4) go to bed at 7:30 (alarm goes off at 7:25 to brush their teeth). They get 5 mins of "no noise", counted down in 1 min lots, then a hug, kiss and the lights are turned off. My 10 year old goes at 8pm (but quite often stays up reading until well after 9), and my 12 year old goes anytime between 8:30-9pm depending on homework levels. During school terms the eldest has to be awake by 6am to get ready for school. I normally wake the 10 y/o at about 7am. Thetwo y/o can be awake from any time. And the 4 y/o quite often beats his father awake (5:30am), much to my disguist when I have got home from work at 1am!

Our boys (7 & 9) usually go to bed at 8.30 in Summer (with daylight savings) and 8pm in the colder darker months. As they get older they will probably want to stay up longer.

My twin girls who are 22 months go to bed at about 7:30 and they wake up at about 8:30.  My 4 year old (who has been going to bed later and later) go to bed at 8 but it can take him up to an hour to fall asleep. He wakes up at 7:30.

Re: What time is bed time for children in your house?
We aim for 8pm, but in summer they don't want to go to sleep if it's still light outside, so then we leave bedtime till 8.30.  IF dinner is very late, or something else has happened, they could be in bed by 9pm only.  Each family is different, so my advice is do what works for you family.

Re: What time is bed time for children in your house?
here it depends on the day due to work commitments of my partner and i but our routine stays roughly the same on the individual days from week to week, no change for age as they share a room (6yo boy and 2yo girl), ours can range from 6pm - 8pm. i was never brought up with set bedtimes, my brother and i just used to tell mum when we were tired and she would put us to bed. my kids do the same most days. only time we have a litle bit of a issue is fridays when they have friends over to play with. sleeping is just too boring then. ::)'s

We're up at 5am, outside in the yard by 5:30 for my morning cup of coffee while Miss 5 has a play on the swings or trampoline.  I hate mornings in general, but it is nice watching the sun come up.  Luckily in winter she's happy to just get some books and jump back into bed again and we stay there until 6:30, even 7 if we're organised enough the night before.

Re: What time is bed time for children in your house?
I think it is great to establish routines with children. Especially bedtime ones! I think an apprpraite bedtime for children up to the age of about 10 is anywhere from 6:30 to 8:00pm. If you develope a time that works best for your family, it will help with the whole day routin and allow enough sleep for everyone - even you!!!! Goodluck!!! p.s stay calm if everything doesnt work out the first time and keep trying to enforce gently the routine on your kids and family.

Re: What time is bed time for children in your house?
Hi, my children go to bed at different times, my son James who is 2 years and 8 months old still has a day time sleep at 12 every day and he goes down at 8:30pm every night. My 1 year old daughter goes down at about 6 then up again for an hour at about 9 then back to bed at 10pm. They both sleep until about 7am in the morning and you could push till about 7.30 till they get mad. Hope this helps

Re: What time is bed time for children in your house?
For all of our kids, the bedtime is 8.30 (that's in bed, settled, lights out).  My four kids range in age from 18 months to 6 years.  They wake around 8am each morning.  We are less strict on the weekends, although if they have a late night, we ensure that the next night they are in bed at or before 8.30. My husband gets home from work between 6.30 and 7 most nights, sometimes later, so if I put them to bed earlier he wouldn't have much time with them, and that would be bad for them and him.  He loves his evening time. I've been criticised by friends for putting my kids to bed too late.  They think we're being selfish for keeping them up to have time with their dad.  I totally disagree, but it still makes me feel horrible to be criticised this way.  Their kids go to bed at 7, and are up by 6.30 every morning.  Seems the same to me, just offset.

Re: What time is bed time for children in your house?
Both my kids 3 1/2 year old boy and 17 months old little girl are in bed asleep by 7pm most nights. In saying this my boy will wake up at least 2 times during the night and usually end up in our bed by about 1am. My daughter will sleep right through till about 8am. My daughter will have 2-3 hours sleep during the day where as my son will not sleep during the day. Hope this helps xoxoxo

Your right every household and child is different, I believe children do need organised schedules though. Reading the age and times you have set below, seem pretty spot on. My son was in bed by 7.30pm till he went to High School, then we allowed him a extra half an hour for every year he was in High School, worked well.

Re: What time is bed time for children in your house?
My soon to be 3 y/o son goes to bed generally at 7 all though wednesday thursday night he can go to bed as early as 6pm. He is generally up between 530 and 630 am. And on the odd occasion such as family event['s, bdays etc he can stay up as late as 10pm cos he has other kids to play with him and he gets really excited. He very rarely day naps either and hasn't for a long time either. He is also very active and as someone else said some kids just need less sleep. I really envy my SIL whos son napped til he started school fulltime and even occasionally after tht and whos daughter will frequently sleep in til 9 on the weekend with an 7-8 pm bed time. it amazes me.

I have 2 girls - 10months and 2/3/4 years. Both go to bed usually between 7 and 7.15. 7.30 at the latest if dinner or bath takes a little longer.
My youngest used to go to bed at 6.30 but the last 2 months she has been sleeping later in the afternoon and staying up that extra bit longer.

Re: What time is bed time for children in your house?
We head upstairs on or soon after 6pm, as our bedtime routine can be quite extensive (what with DD1s eczema treatment, reading, etc). DD2 (2) is usually asleep between 7 & 730pm. DD1 (6) has her light switched off at 730, though she strings it out to 8pm if she can, though once she has settled she is usually asleep in 10 minutes. She called me upstairs at 845 tonight for a hot water bottle (grrr) so I know getting her out of bed at 7am will be like raising the dead tomorrow. IF DD2 sleeps thru, she will usually surface about 630, but this is a newly acquired skill which she isnt very good at yet!

Re: What time is bed time for children in your house?
My children need very little sleep.  I really envy the parents who get their children to be at 7:00.  My 2 year old goes to bed around 8:30 and is up by 7:00.  My 4 year old goes to bed around 9:00 and is up by 7:00.  They do not nap.  Both of them are very active.  We spend a lot of time outdoors and a minimum amount of time with the tv on.   If you are getting your children your bed that early you are very fortunate.  From what I have heard that is a normal time but not all children need that much.

That's right, some need more than others.  It's good to know from other parents rather than reading from professionals that babies and children sleep for x hours during the day and x hours at night and they sleep from this time to that time.  KWIM? It's just good to know from real people with real children.

My son is 10 months and his bed time is usually between 10pm-12am. He sleeps twice during the day and that's why he stays up late.
