2 year old sleep problems, please help!!

My son is 2 years old and for the past few months he has been really hopeless with sleep. He goes to bed around 7.30-8pm and in the half hour after putting him to bed he has a habit of going to the door and crying, screaming, banging the door with his legs until we go in and put him back to bed. Sometimes this happens 3+ times until he falls asleep. He wakes up every morning around 4.30-5am. Even though its darker around this time now (we thought the daylight woke him up) he still gets up. He does all the things I described above (banging on door, screaming etc) until someone lets him out. If we try to put him back in bed he just gets back up and repeats until we give up and let him out. We can't ignore this behaviour because all our rooms are close to his (wakes his sisters up). I try to keep him moving throughout the day and he is usually tired when he goes to bed but he still does this screaming routine. Its waking everyone in the house up. Is there ANYTHING I can do about this? We are all VERY tired!!!

Re: 2 year old sleep problems, please help!!
My son is four next month and just for the past two maybe three weeks has started to fall asleep before 10pm...  We'd stick him in bed at 8pm and he'd do all those things you describe...  We had a child gate in front of his door until he was able to climb over it..  Ignoring is not easy... I KNOW ..... And now with the baby it had gotten harder... BUT...... Of late I have changed his routine....  And all I did was put him in his Pj's an hour before bed...  I tell him to put his PJ's on, but your not going to sleep yet...   Then about 10 minutes before he goes to bed, start the count down..  10 minutes before you go to sleep Francis.... 5 minutes before bed Francis... 4 minutes before bed Francis....  I also told him his bedroom lamp was broken (he put a blanket on the light and it melted on the light so I just said it was broken)... And now the only light in his room comes from the bathroom...  I also sometimes allow a story CD...   But since the PJ's an hour before bed, and minimum of light (just enough for him to see his way to the bathroom) he is out like a light before 9.30 to 10pm... And less fuss... Your son is only two so I can't promise this would work for you.. But I wish you luck.. As I know how difficult it can be...

Does he nap through the day? Perhaps he is over tired, yes, I know it sounds odd. But overtired toddlers will exhibit these signs. There is a saying about the more of something you have the more you want, it is so true in regards to sleep. My boy would quiet frequently be overtired and there for we would struggle to get him to sleep. Introducing another day nap sorted it out quiet quickly. We have had almost every sleeping issue possible, including when we moved him out of the cot (for safety) to a bed, he would constantly get up time after time for up to 3+ hrs. We dealt with it eventually by laying with him til he went to sleep and having a constant routine (dinner, bath, milk, bed). Eventually it took less and less time and in less than 6 months he was going to sleep in an average of 15 mins. Now less than 9 months (in total) It takes less than 5 minutes and I walk out b4 he is even asleep. It is a long drawn out process but totally worth it. Everyone here is getting enough sleep and with a lot less stress, not to mention my partner and I can spend some quality time alone together in the evening. Hope this has been of some help, if you have any questions minti mail your email addy (as I can only recieve and not send via minti mail) and I would be happy to go into some of the finer details of what we did to sort out our sleepless boy.

PS, my boy doesn't day nap anymore because he is getting enough sleep over night. But it is quiet common for toddlers this age to still be having naps.

LOL.  *Looks over at couch at 3 year old daughter who's refusing to sleep*. Um, bad news, this is normal behaviour! lol.  Our toddlers do it a lot and so does our baby. It is a phase, and he should grow out of it soon.  It can also be an indication that he is not going through an active growth phase, but through a slower growth phase, which tends to happen at about this age. As for what you can do, just be consistant with what you try, ignore the tantrums, and if you have to give in, let him go to sleep on the couch.
