body piercing Q

as some of you know I am highly involved in my kids school and last Friday I noticed as a year 6 walked past that he had a flesh tunnel in his ear. This made me very shocked and lead me to this Q. Do you think children should be able to have body pericing like this? i know since I was at school which was only 10 years ago we had a no body jewlery policy, earings were ok but nothing else, and I was at a public school. Would you let your 10-11 year old have body jewlery that would need cosmetic surgury to be removed (flesh tunnels for those who dont know are those huge holes in your ear like the african ladies/men, and they arent like a normal piercing where u take it out and it closes up) Is it just me with this problem????? I do know that you cant get anything pierced unless you are over 16 and 18 in some cases and or have parent concent.......

Re: body piercing Q
In this case my answer would be no. And my reason for this is because the flesh tunnel depending on the size of it could leave their ears like that for life. Unless they're an adult or at least almost an adult, they're not truly thinking clearly for their future. Although I wouldn't go kicking up a stink about it, there's more to life than complaining about what other parents let their kids do.

Re: body piercing Q
I honsetly think it is up to the parents. I have my ears gaged which is a flesh tunnel. They arent big, but they are bigger then an 18 which is standard ear rings. To be honest I dont see the problem. Now on a 6 year old I think the parents need to be shot because it doesnt feel good to get it done. And to be honest if you gage your ears they will close up on their own. I have had to re-do mine 10 times. Mine are about the size of a tonuge ring...or a belly button ring. Not big but I garentee you try to put that through your ear it will hurt like a mofo. And I know in Florida no place will gage your ears you must buy the gages and do it yourself....>.< PAINFUL. Only reason is because you go to large you lobes can rip. again I think it is up to the parents.

Re: body piercing Q
In SA it is illegal to preform body piercings on anyone under the age of 16, this includes flesh tunnels (not the standard hairdresser ear piercing). Any piercings done in a tattoo or piercing studio must be over 16yrs and have parental permission if 16 or 17 yrs. I'm not sure about other states.

Re: body piercing Q
Its only another type of ear ring, not that big of a deal. I had my belly ring done when i was 11,iT's no big deal. Now im 19 and still have it. I had my guts back then anyway. No way id go and get one done now. Alot of it these days is influenced by friends. If one gets something the others want it done too.

Re: body piercing Q
This is a flesh tunnel. it isnt just a "normal" earing. it is a hole and once you have the plug out there is still a hole. I know this as I have friends with this. 1 who is now having plastic surgury to have it closed up as they dont close up.

Re: body piercing Q
i never said it just a "NORMAL" ear, i said its just another ear ring. im sure parents and the kids know that they hole is for good so its their choice to have it and shouldnt be judged

It may be considered a normal earring to other people though.

Re: body piercing Q
it doesnt come down to whether its illegal or not (tho at that age it should be) but parent consent. if the parents signed the form saying the child can have it done then its their choice.  tho in my opinion the school should really say something about this. I know when i was in school i couldn't even have two studs i was made to take one lot out (tho i cheated and used a sleeper in both).  and boys weren't allowed to have piercings. iv seen 13 yr olds with belly bars/nose rings/eyebrow rings and parents have said yes to it.

um wow. I wouldn't let my 17 year old get that done. She got her ears periced when she was 10 ( has a heart problem and had to wait for doc to ok witch took forever). I have seen those earring in adults ears but never kids that should be illegal or something.

Re: body piercing Q
Pretty bad hey and probably very painful and way to young to have that. This day and age we have so much information on how to deal with different situations and long term effects yet we seem to be seeing adults treating their children as adults rather than letting them be children like letting young children watch A.O or M15+ movies or games which they probably enjoy but are not old enough to understand even some PG movies can be a bit much. I wonder if there is alaw about somthink like that it is wrong I would talk to the principal and tell then your not happy what short of message is this sending to vulnerable parents or the other children in the school  whats next tattoo's.

Re: body piercing Q
It would depend what kind of piercing for me... but a 10-11 year old I would refuse to let any kind of gruesome looking piercing until they turned 18. Then again it could have been for cultural reasons too.

Re: body piercing Q
its not for cultural reasons. he is a "typical" aussie. Mum has a holden and all of that aussie stuff. Wouldnt have a problem with it if it was a cultural thing

Maybe I am from the old school, but I disapprove  strongly of this type of body  piercing.

Re: body piercing Q
That should be the domain of adulthood. We have to have some right of passage for surviving that long, being allowed to get stuff like that should our specialty dammit! Seriously though, yeah, I think a flesh tunnel is a bit much for a kid that young. He's now stuck with it, he's not mature enough to know how he's going to feel about it when he's an adult, and his chances of losing his earlobe entirely by getting it snagged and torn out has just been increased ten-fold. But my question is, why hasn't the school had something to say about it? When I was a kid it was sleepers and studs and that was it. We weren't even allowed to wear necklaces ffs. What's with schools nowdays? Freedom of such choice is one thing, but as far as I'm aware there are laws against kids getting tats and body peircings (standard ear piercing excepted).

Re: body piercing Q
there is a rule at our school, sleepers and studs only, no dangles which is why I was surprised to see this kid. (sadly he is also my next door neighbour too and a ruff buggar) its not like it is a small 2 mm one its quite big and in the play ground a pinky could easily be put near it and torn through. there is a 18+ age limit for tats. both of mine I have had to show my drivers licence and signed a proof of age and that i sighted all material in sealed sterile bags. This is also with body piercing so I just dont get it.
