sore ankles and wrists

 My baby is 4 months old now, and since I was pregnant I have had sore ankles, and now my wrists as well. It doesn't seem to be getting better, and my ankles hurt more when I first stand up and get a bit better once I have walked around a bit. Is this related to my pregnancy? I know your joints take a while to get back to normal, but I haven't seen any other new mums hobbling around like I am. Any similar experiences?

i got carpel tunnel from my pregnancy. it usually goes away but mine stayed and has gotten pretty bad.

Thanks everyone, some good points there that I'll look into. My mum also mentioned that it might be gout as I don't think I'm drinking enough water, and I'm breastfeeding so I need to drink even more. I'll go see my doctor and I've been meaning to start physio mums and babies class, and I'll try to remember to take my calcium supplements every day :)

I hd my son 8 months ago and i still suffer with sore ankles and knees. My wrists hurt at times but i do use the computer alot. For me, i put on 25kgs during my pregnancy which i lost within 2months of giving birth. So i think the big weight gain over 9 months and then to lose it so quickly has affected my joints. I do know they loosed up durig pregnancy and can stay loose if you breastfeed but i didnt breastfeed. Im glad you posted this, I was starting to think i had arthiritis or something.

also i agree with blue haven, do take exercise very easily. I didnt rest at all ater i ahd my son, only in the hospital and that was it.I was very run down so i got glandular fever. I still didnt slow down then, i did lots of walking an dnow ims tuck with shin splints, they just add to my leg pain so its whole leg pain now.

Just to add, all your ligaments and tendons get "stretched" with the hormones assiocated with pregnancy as well as the extra "burden" of weight on your joints. That includes the the fluid build up during pregnancy. As what was said it will take awhile for your body to recover. I would as well as take extra calcium, try gentle and I do mean gentle exercise. Stretch your foot and ankle joints till you feel it begin to tighten then ease off. Then pull your toes and foot up until you begin to feel it pull in the back of your calf muscle then release. A physio will provide you with gentle exercises to help get your body's strength back. If you go for walks, walk only on flat surfaces ( not up hills) and don't walk to far. You don't want to over do it. Def, see a physio they're really helpful.

Hi Littlelaydee I know from my experience with this problem, babies take alot of calcium from your body. So try some calcium supplements, of course consult your doctor if you haven't already. I had alot of problems with my hands and feet because the nerves to those areas were swollen with fluid too, which also causes the pain..(known as carpal tunnel syndrome). It took about a year after my first child for the pain to go away fully...So as I said see your doctor, but you may have to just perservere with the pain but it does eventually go away..I feel for you though. The calcium tablets did help. It's a silly thing to say to a parent I know but also time with your feet up does help...I know...haha Regards Roberta (mumoftwinsntoddler)
