Is it safe for children to have pepperoni?

Just wanted to settle an argument with the partner (lol) When is it ok for kids to have pepperoni?  I always thought over two or three, youngest is 20 months and I thought its a bit early for pepperoni but my partner didnt see anything wrong with it.  I did a little google search but found nothing as yet.  He does eat ham sometimes, but thought pepperoni might have a few more nasty's in it.  What does everyone else think? thanks

Re: Pepperoni
My 17 month old eats it - only occasionally. I don't think it is unsafe, but it is unhealty (nitrates etc).

Re: Pepperoni
all processed meats should be eaten to a minimum not just for children but for us adults too i cant put up a link or anything but ive heard that researchers have linked processed meats to cancer but before  i alarm you experts themselves differ in so many things but just to be on the safe side i keep processed meats to a minimum

Re: Pepperoni
I was initially hesitant to give my kids pepperoni/metwurst type meats because of the "garibaldi" incident a few years ago- contaminated meats that caused a child to die and many more to be very sick, from HUS (haemolytic uraemic syndrome).  This hit me more so because I was working  in the kids medical ward at the time in the same hospital and saw the devastation it caused.  My older kids have had meats like that, i can't remember how old they were but after that food poisoning incident, we rarely eat meat like that unless it is cooked (like on pizza).  Having said that, you would hope that strict food procedures and protocols would prevent that type of thing from ever happening again, still its made me more wary.

Re: Pepperoni
I agree, after that incident I threw away all my processed meats for awhile. I usually wait  to about 3yrs just because the garlic and other strong flavours tend to upset stomachs. Same applies for nuts, specially peanuts for allergies. Ham, silverside, chicken loaf and fritz I start at 2yrs when they can eat a sandwich. It really depends on your childs stomach and their ability to eat that sort of food without choking on it.
