Re: how to stop breastfeeding
By 21 months they are beginning to understand plenty, which can either work for or against you! I started on DD1 at about that age with "when you are BIG you wont have mummy milk any more" and when I went cold turkey a few months later and rewarded her for being "BIG" with a longed for toy, she only complained once or twice. With DD2 I have tried the same conditioning tactic but she insists she is still a "baby", so I have cut down her feeds to just bedtime and will go cold turkey from that when I am ready for the fight. She knows what reward is waiting for her, which I hope will soften the blow. When I went cold turkey with DD1 I went out several evenings in a row so I couldnt give in. I felt awful as I drove away, both for her and for DH and for what I was losing, even though I was quite happy with my decision. Be prepared for very mixed emotions!

Re: how to stop breastfeeding
This is a hard one, pro breastfeeders will tell you not to stop for a start however you need to do whats right for you. I stopped breastfeeding at 19mths and my job was made a little easier due tomy son having a bad cold and it was difficult for him to feed  and breathe at the same time so I went cold turkey and didn't reoffer the breast.  He adjusted to this quite well and there were no repercussions from it. It depends on how often your child is still feeding from you but if its only at morning and night, try offering either breastmilk or full cream milk in a spillproof cup instead.  At 21mths old I presume they are drinking other fluid such as water from a cup? Be persistant if you want to wean, don't give up and offer breast ocassionally as this will give mixed messages.  Best of luck.
