December 25, 2008 07:52 AM The reading animals should tackle the the archives of what some call "the newspaper of record", the New York Times. After getting through the archives, they can hit the Web site at nytimes.com to get up to speed on current affairs.

Asker's Rating: • Thank you all for giving such great answers to my whimsical question! I enjoyed reading them and that hope others do also. It was difficult to decide on a best answer, but in the end I just could not resist picking this answer with its great choice of image! :)

December 25, 2008 08:37 AM I haven't had enough acid to answer this question accurately yet, but if I was forced to answer it right now, I would say that Brave New World is probably the best book an animal can read for insight into people.

December 25, 2008 09:00 AM The Animal Farm by George Orwell of course. :)

The short novella is an allegory in which animals play the roles of the Bolshevik revolutionaries and overthrow and oust the human owners of the farm, setting it up as a commune in which, at first, all animals are equal; however, class and status disparities soon emerge between the different animal species. The novel describes how a society's ideologies can be manipulated and twisted by those in positions of social and political power, including how a utopian society is made impossible by the corrupting nature of the very power necessary to create it. December 25, 2008 10:56 AM Start them off with some trashy tabloids. They'll learn more about human nature in a tabloid newspaper than in any volume of academic psychobabble or pretentious literary work.

December 25, 2008 04:26 PM Reading only one type of source runs the danger of a very one sided and bias understanding of people. Reading psycology and sociology textbooks would provide an excellent framework, but without the tabloids mentioned above the animals will miss how theory turns into reality.

I would also suggest reading works of fiction and of different languages. Seeing how we learn about human nature through exaggerated works of fiction, so too can the animals.

December 25, 2008 04:48 PM The question asks about people in 2009 which requires a certain amount of speculation. To understand the people of a particular year it would be best to read the internet newspapers, cartoons, and blogs from that year. But, which papers and blogs will best represent human character in 2009? I suspect that the Dilbert site will be among the best, and recommend that the future animals read the archived Dilbert cartoons from 2009.

Seriously. Most regular news outlets are too corporate. Most tabloid sites are too "celeb obsessed". But, Perez's is very "real" still. And Drudge's editorial view is also "real". And, they cancel each other out on the political/social end of the spectrum.
