Is it legal under flsa to pay one employee salary and another employee hourly for doing the same job?

We want to pay an exceptional individual on a salary basis however, all others in his job classification are paid on an hourly basis. He has potential and this is more for an expression of our interest in him and not a promotion.

>Adding on to IMHO answer which follows FLSA, there is nothing in the law to prohibit you from raising his hourly rate unless you have a collective bargaining contract in place. Just take him aside and inform him you see a potential in him to help the company and the raise is your way of acknowledging his effort and future in the company. Most FLSA standards regarding wages are based on reduction not increases
