these are some tips for any parent with an autistic child  and might differ from child to child  even newly diagnosed children it helps to keep your sanity

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CHILDS ENVIRONMENT AND ROUTINE

keep the environment predictable and familiar have a regular GA_googleFillSlot("minti_advice_island_logged_out_300x250"); schedule that the household follows and post it to the fridge or other obivios places were other family members can see it prepare your child for changes use  pictures and calenders to help  your child predict upcoming events  clearly mark on your calander when a trip. dentist or peadiatriciann appointment is coming up so your child can prepare themselves for it and its not a shock  when moving your child from an activity they enjoy  to another activity  to avoid a major tantrum give them a countdown . a countdown lets your child  know that they will have to change activity in a few minutes for example "15 minutes and we will go from playing cars to reading a book " or "30 minutes to bedtime"  then mention the change in activity    every few minutes till the activity changes ,( using an alarm or egg timer is also helpful so your child can see how close it is too changing ) provide structure and routine  create a daily list of activies for your child   and events for that day  this daily list then can be photocopied if needed for child care centres school , babysitters , respite carers  and other things involving  with your child   allow your child to mark off activies they have done this helps them feel they have achieved something and makes them feel better about themselves . in saying this about the daily list it should also have included things that they have to do like .............chores,homework, bathing ,and other grooming activities  the daily list not only provides a routine but it also reinforces  appropriate behaviours make sure the daily routines are  not  interuped unneccessarily  because this will cause tantrums and unwanted behaviours continue the routine as much as possible when traveling be aware of things around your home that can upset or affect your childs behaviour for example :

noise , like a buzzing fluorencent bulb   or air conditioning system

tempreture , when possible control the tempreture of your childs bedroom and play area

smell, some smells bother autisic children please be aware of smells inyour childs enviroment these may include

cleaning products, deodorants ,and air fresheners

strange people , autistic children can get excited or withdraw around new people whenever possible let your child know when a relative or new person will come to visit

also whenever possible get a photo of this new person and put he picture up on the fridge or somewhere your child will see it and refer to it frequently before the visit occurs

TO HELP INPROVE YOUR CHILDS BEHAVIOUR

work on communication early and as often as possible  be consistant with your efforts if will pay off  better communication will help  with your childs fustration and may lead to better behaviours  model simple phrases like   "i have ",' i want..... etc also try and have your child repeat the phrase if possible  use sign or gestures picture boards and communication devices when speech is not possible  teach your child to make their own chioces wherever possible and acceptable  be consistant with rewarding good and wanted behaviours , rewards can be ........verbal praise , a star on their daily list of accomplishments or a toy   unwanted behaviour should be addresses immeadiatly autistic children cannot read emotional signals ,so then gain your childs attention  and let them know what behaviour you expect in clear and understandable terms

i hope this helps for parent with an autistic child good luck but remember they are still a child have fun doing kids stuff and acknowlage  the child not the disability
