Regarding bike lanes, consideration should be given to:
On streets that carry 2-way traffic, 2-way bike lanes should run down the CENTER of the street.
That way, cyclists could see cars better, it eliminates dooring, and cars at stop signs on cross streets could see approaching cyclists better.
Another option: On a mid-street bike lane, when a cyclist wants to take a turn at a controlled intersection, he/she can wait for the light to change, then proceed with the cross-traffic. (Which is akin to how it's done in some European countries that have dedicated bike infrastructure.)
