What are your experiences with dogs with allergies? Our vet said it could take six weeks to know if the food helps.

i, We recently adopted a Chihuahua mix. Cricket is about 2 1/2 years old. She's been with us about a month. She came to us fine but has developed allergies while here. Her eyes are tearing, she rubs her ears, mouth and face. She is also scratching a bald spot on her chest. We're not sure if they're environmental or food related. We transitioned her to a grain free food because that's what our other dog eats. A friend said her dog is allergic to poultry. Our vet started her on Benadryl (which isn't doing much) and we're also using locally made honey to help if they're environmental. We feed Taste of the Wild so I went and bought the salmon/potato flavor so we can eliminate poultry. Our vet said we could try the Hill's z/d prescription food. He said its extremely expense. We'll take it on if we have to but ouch. She came to us eating "some kind of Purina" but the foster mom believes it was mixed with something else. That's not going to help us go backwards and start over. What are your experiences with dogs with allergies? Our vet said it could take six weeks to know if the food helps. Thank you for any advice you can offer.

My dogs with allergy issues have done well on Natural Balance L.I.D. formulas. Also, consider that the dog may have a grass allergy (being on it, not eating it). I noticed positive changes within a month of changing foods, but six weeks sounds reasonable. Some vets would even say three months. Also, don't forget to check ingredients in treats. Good luck!

For an elimination diet you need to control all treats and chews as well.

The most common food allergies in dogs are to the protein sources.

Tearing eyes are more often associated with environmental allergies though.
