Assuming the human race will be around that long (and it probably won't), the Earth will eventually be consumed by our Sun as it nears the end of its main sequence. The Sun will grow to hundreds of times its current size and envelop the Earth. Long before that, all life will have been incinerated.

Alternative Answer

Earth often has brushes with comets and meteors like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs. One nearly (in space terms, as in, 5 million miles away is a near miss) hit around Christmas a few years ago. Another meteor has been spotted heading in our sort of direction, and if it hits, it will hit in 2027. But there's about a 500 million mile area it could go through, with Earth in that area. It's not THAT likely to hit - but it might.

We can't blow it up because that would scatter HUGE chunks of radioactive rocks across Earth. We can't redirect it with rockets unless someone starts funding rocket science again.

With climate change, wars for water will probably ensue, and society as we know it will disappear. Humans will live more like animals. But we'll probably die out from not having enough water and being unable to grow crops or farm livestock due to changes in temperatures and weather. There are a lot of ways mankind could die out - if that's what you mean! The earth could end due to the expansion of the sun, or being hit by a comet, or nuclear explosions (unlikely) but it's more likely that mankind will end before the world does.

Christians have predicted several events that many believe are related: the second coming of Jesus, the war of Armageddon, the arrival on earth of the Antichrist, the Tribulation, the Rapture, some horrendous natural disaster, etc. Jewish, Islamic, psychic, occult and other predictions have been offered as well.

We have listed over 7 dozen past predictions of the end of the world which have one factor in common: none ever came true. There is every likelihood that most (perhaps all) of these future predictions will not materialize either.

We have been criticized by some of our readers for whipping up hysteria about the end of the world. Our intent is the exact opposite: we want to dampen the level of panic. We hope that by listing many dozens of past predictions -- all of which have failed -- that people will realize that some very important individuals have been totally wrong when they predicted the end of the world. End of the world predictions have been common throughout Christianity and other religions for almost 2000 years. It is probable that none of the following predictions of the date of the end of the world will come true. We will be very surprised if they do.

Predictions of TEOTWAWKI (The end of the world as we know it):

bullet 2010+ In early 2005, Roderick C. Meredith, leader of the Living Church of God wrote in his church's magazine Tomorrow's World that the end of the world is near. He said that events prophesied in the Bible are "beginning to occur with increasing frequency....We are not talking about decades in the future. We are talking about Bible prophesies that will intensify within the next five to 15 years of your life." This prophecy, or a local sermon based on it, may have been partly responsible for triggering a mass murder in Brookfield WI on 2005-MAR-12. Church member Terry Ratzmann, who was experiencing serious depression and facing unemployment, shot 11 people, killing 7, and then killed himself at a church service. 1

bullet 2011-SEP-29: Harold Camping, president of Family Radio is reported as predicting that the end of the world will occur sometime during the eight day Feast of Trumpets in 2011. This is an eight day festival each fall in the 5th day of Ethanim, the seventh month. He has completed a book "Time Has an End: A biblical History of the World 11,013 BC ? 2011 AD," Vantage Press, (2005). Read reviews or order this book safely from Amazon.com online book store.

bullet 2011-NOV-11: We received an Email from "A.H." who believes that the end of the world will happen on 11/11/11. His reasoning is that "...this is the only date until the next millennium that has the same number "1" in the date." Actually, it is the only date until 3011 which is made up of the repetition of pairs of the same digit. We are skeptical. Recall that the Gregorian Calendar is based on the year 1 CE having being arbitrarily chosen. It occurred four to seven years after Jesus birthday, when nothing much of world impact was happening. With an arbitrary beginning, it doesn't make a lot of sense to assume that the end of the world would happen at some magical combination of numbers in the Gregorian date, like the first day of the year 2000, or 11.11.11.

bullet 2012: This year seems to be a major focal point for many prophecies. We discuss them in another essay.

bullet 2012-2019: Damon_051572, who describes himself as "the physical and spiritual Jew," distributed an Email widely on 2006-AUG-19. It it titled: "Message from God: Some events of the end of the world." He of the events that he predicts will happen sometime before 2019 are:

bullet The Two Witnesses mentioned in Revelation will issue prophecies and send plagues.

bullet 144,000 Jewish virgins convert many to Christianity.

bullet People will be required to receive a mark on their hand or forehead. Any that accept the mark "will be cast into the lake of fire forever to experience unimaginable suffering forever."

bullet Satan and his angels attack God's kingdom.

bullet Nuclear war begins.....

bullet 2014:

bullet According to Sun magazine for 1999-DEC-21, Pope Leo IX (1513-1522) wrote on 1514: "I will not see the end of the world, nor will you my brethren, for its time is long in the future, 500 years hence."

bullet Isaiah Robertson predicts that Jesus' second coming will happen in Niagara Falls. He said: "Niagara Falls is a holy place, like Jerusalem. The sound of the water going over the falls is the voice of God." He expects that the water at the base of the falls will turn into a "lake of fire." He said that a cross in his home came "straight from God. Itís not manís work. This cross is telling you that the coming of the Lord is at hand. If you walk away from this cross and donít accept Christ, then youíre lost forever." 2

bullet 2016: An article in Weekly World News describes a find by a Professor Lloyd Cunningdale of Salt Lake City who was excavating with his students at the site of the famous Donner party disaster of 1847. The latter were a group of settlers bound for California who became trapped by snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Cunningdale and students have found a time capsule left by the settlers which contains many predictions for the future. They predict that nations will abandon traditional methods of conflict and resort to the use of biological warfare. In 2016, one such disease will spread and kill all of the humans on the planet. 3

bullet 2017:

bullet The "Sword of God Brotherhood" believes that Armageddon will occur in 2017. The Prophet Gabriel has told them this. Only their own members will survive to repopulate the world. All of the others (including you and me) will "perish in hellfire." 4

bullet Daniel's Timeline bases their calculation on the concept of Jubilee years which occur every 50 years. "" The most recent three Jubilees were:

bullet 1867 when the Jews were emancipated in Austria and Hungary.

bullet 1917 when the Ottomon rule ended and the Balfour Declaration was created.

bullet 1967 when the Six Day War occurred.

They predict that the next and final Jubilee year will be 2017 "the time of the restitution of all things." 5

bullet Before 2018: The web site "A Nightmare for Everyone and the Countdown to 2000," predicts that an asteroid and comet will hit the earth, sometime between the re-creation of Israel in 1948 and 2018. See: http://www.geocities.com/

bullet 2020s or 2030s: Bill Joy, co-founder and chief scientist of Sun Microsystems predicted the end of humanity in within 20 or 30 years, in an article in the 2000-APR issue of Wired Magazine. He wrote that leading-edge technologies such as robotics, genetic engineering and nano-tech may soon lead to the extinction of human society. 6

bullet Before 2024: A web site titled "Fire from the sky: Meteors and Biblical Prophecy," predicts that a meteor (actually a meteorite) "could" hit the earth sometime between 1998 and 2023. This would cause fireballs of debris, tidal waves, supher [sic] dioxide, a "red tide" in the oceans, and a dust cloud.

bullet 2028-OCT: Asteroid "1997 XF11" will approach close to earth. At first, scientists were concerned that there was a small probability that it might impact earth. However, data from 1990 has indicated that it will miss earth by about 600,000 miles. 7 Still, this is a near miss, as astronomical distances go.

bullet About 2028: A visitor to this web site from Norway has analyzed biblical chronologies and determined to his satisfaction that "Jesus became Messiah [about the year 28 CE] exactly 4000 years after Creation." He believes that God created the world to last 6,000 years. Thus, the end of the world will happen about 2028. Actually, various theological sources estimate the date of Jesus' execution between 28 and 33 CE. 30-APR-07 is a common date. So, the millennium of Jesus' resurrection would occur between 2028 and 2033, with the most likely date being 2030-APR-07.

bullet 2029: Mike Flipp believes that God has been communicating with him by sending him signs all based on the number 2. He wrote in an Email: "And then on April 26th, 2005 EXACTLY 2 years worth of getting signs of 2's, I got the Grandiose Sign of the Aceptable Year of the Lord - Luke 4:19." The sign is that Jesus will return in the year 2029. He does not kinow the month, day, or hour. See: http://www.two.cc

bullet 2034: The website 2034AD.com predicts the end of the current age and the beginning of the Millennium will happen during 2034 CE. They sell a book "Rest Onto the Land" that describes their conclusions. See: http://www.2034ad.com/

bullet Before 2038: The environmental group, Greenpeace, predicts massive starvation due to uncontrolled population growth. Global warning will melt the polar ice caps and cause massive coastal flooding. Thousands of plant and animal species become extinct.

bullet 2038: The book "The Bible and the Future" predicts that "large percentage of the world's population will die in a series of severe punishments from God" at this time. See: http://www.alltheearth.com/

bullet 2047-SEP-14: According to The Church of !BLAIR!, the human race will probably be terminated at 3:28 AM (Soho, England time). The church teaches, with tongue firmly in cheek, that if the human race does not discard their plastic conformity, then the Gods will withdraw their protection. The Gods don't want us to worship them; they don't want sacrifices or even offerings. They just want us to rid itself of our excessive "Normalcy". At that point, Astro-Lemurs (extra-terrestrials similar in shape to lemurs, but with rainbow colored bodies) will attack the entire human race and beat them to death with gigantic burritos. You have been warned. ;-)

Unfortunately, the Church is no longer online to reinforce their warnings.

bullet 2060: Sir Isaac Newton, Britain's greatest scientist, analyzed the Bible, which he believed contained God's secret laws of the universe. He concluded that the end of the world will happen on or after the year 2060. According to Malcolm Neaum, the producer of a TV documentary on Newton: "He spent something like 50 years and wrote 4,500 pages trying to predict when the end of the world was coming. But until now it was not known that he ever wrote down a final figure. He was very reluctant to do so." 8

bullet 2076: Bede the Venerable, an 8th century Christian theologian computed Jesus birth as 3,942 years after the world's creation. The 6,000 year millennial week will thus end in this year.

bullet 2076: Some Sufi sects expect the end of the world in this year, which is the year 1,500 in the Muslim calendar.

bullet Before 2100: "Magnus" reports that his supernatural friends:

"... were making statements to the effect of earth would have initiated the major cataclysmic events during the second world war but Gods authority around me postponed all of that. So in effect all of who have lived since can thank Gods authority for their life, without earth would have commenced those cataclysms a long time ago."

"I know it will begin sometime before 2100, so people will have to live their lives to the fullest from now till then."

This is a question a lot of people are interested in.

There is a young boy that attends our church services that has asked his Sunday School to teach about the end of the world because he wants to know.

When I was a boy, I wondered about it.

I would be very interested when my pastor would preach about the end of the world, and the things that would happen.

I would read the Book of Revelation, wondering about all the prophetic events.

I wondered where I would be when the world came to an end.

My dad wanted me to read the book of John instead of the book of Revelation.

I was lost and needed to hear about the Saviour, not the end of time.

The truth is that the present heaven and earth (the entire universe) we are living in will be completely destroyed and there will be a new heaven and a new earth, wherein dwellest righteousness.

Matt. 24:3,4 - And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? 4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. Jesus didnít ridicule the disciples when they asked him when the world was going to come to an end.

Jesus gave them very credible evidence of the events of the end time.

It isnít wrong to be curious about the end of this world, but we ought to remember that God the Father is the only one who knows when the world will end.

Our job is to look for the return of Christ, and to live like He is coming back today.

There are a lot of scoffing about the end of the world.

Remember the cartoons that show a long-haired, bearded man wearing a white robe and carrying a sign which reads, "Repent, the end is near"? This man is always the "butt of the joke". These cartoons are actually the fulfilling of prophecy.

II Peter 3:3,4 - Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

II Peter 3:10 speaks about a great noise and fervent heat.

Does this mean the earth will be destroyed by an atomic bomb?

I donít think so, because the Bible doesnít say so, and even if an atomic bomb would destroy the entire earth, it would not destroy the entire universe.

When I was growing up, there was much fear about the world being destroyed by an atomic bomb.

Many people where I lived build "fall-out shelters", but nobody ever stayed in them.

There were some "fall-out shelters" build in the St. Louis area, but they were never used.

Zech. 14:12 records that when Christ returns bodily (to save the Jews at the Battle of Armageddon) the bodies of His enemies will melt away. This is very similar to what will happen when God destroys this entire world.

Zech 14:12 - And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

I believe that when Christ turns his glory loose on this sin cursed universe, it will melt before His presence.

II Thess. 2:8 declares that Satan will be destroyed with the brightness of the coming of Christ. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

Is there any truth to aliens coming to the earth and their taking over the earth, destroying the present world, and refurbishing it for their own use and benefit?

I, personally, donít worry about space aliens coming to the earth and taking it over.

I know a lot of people do.

I donít see anything in the Bible about space aliens coming to the earth and destroying it.

But then, I donít believe there is life on any other planet except Earth.

I believe God created the entire universe for the sole benefit of humans.

I believe the human race is that special in the eyes of God.

John 3:16 declares that the human race is so special that God sent His only Begotten Son into the world that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

8. That makes us pretty special!

II. The Events that are coming.

Jesus is going to rapture out the saints.

I Thess 4:16-17 - For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

I believe the rapture is the next event of Godís calendar because Paul was expecting Christ to come back during his lifetime.

I Thess 4:17 - Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

2. When will the rapture take place?

Matt. 24:44 - Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

Nobody, except God the Father knows when the rapture will take place.

We are supposed to be watching and waiting for His return, obeying His precepts and teaching them to others, as we have opportunity.

The next event after the rapture will be the seven year tribulation period in which God will deal primarily with the Jewish nation, but many Gentiles will also be saved.

This will be the fulfilling of Satanís kingdom, because God will allow him to rule over all the nations of the world.

Luke 4:5,6 - And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, showed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

Satanís seven year kingdom will be divided into two 3 ? year periods.

The first half will be a time of relative peace, but there is much trouble brewing.

The last half will be a time of restless war, and upheaval.

Rev. 16:1-14 gives the description of the events that take place in Satanís kingdom just before the Battle of Armageddon.

At the end of the tribulation period, the Battle of Armageddon will be fought, where all nations will gather against Israel in an attempt to completely destroy her from off the face of the earth.

Christ will appear in the sky, accompanied with all his saints, to destroy the enemies of Israel and to fight for her.

There will be a clean up of dead bodies from this battle which will last seven months. Ezk. 39:14.

Israel will burn the weapons of the enemy for seven years. Ezk. 39:9,10.

Christ will establish Himself as the supreme ruler of the earth for a period of 1,000 years, where every nation will worship Him, whether they want to or not. Zech. 14:16.

At the end of that millennium reign (1,000 year), Satan will be loosed out of the bottomless pit, and he will go out to deceive the nations of the world, and gather them together for the battle of Gog and Magog.

God will completely destroy all his enemies at this point.

The earth will be burned up with fire and all the riches men have worked for all their lives will be gone.

Time will end, and God will create a new heaven and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
