The "plumbers" broke into the Democratic National Committee office in the Watergate Complex. They wiretaped phones, stole documents, etc. They also had illegally obtained compaign money they used for "hush money" to pay off people. They did lots of "illegal" things. The Supreme Court ordered Nixon to turn over his illegally tape recorded phone conversations. He knew then it was all over so he resigned. The only President to have done so.

it began with five men being arrested after breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate hotel complex in Washington, D.C. on June 17, 1972. The scandal reached to the top levels of American government, and the attempted cover-up of the break-in ultimately led to Nixon's dramatic resignation on August 9, 1974.

There were also many tape recorded edited conversations found that implicated Nixon in the cover-up.

Two men broke into the Democratic National Headquarters in the Watergate Hotel. They were searching for the Democrats strategy and any dirt they could find on Democrats.

Nixon was involved in a cover-up, eradicating the trust the American people had in the Office of The President. He was about to be impeached when he resigned office.

The scandal wasn't that they broke into the hotel. It's because they broke into the National Democratic Headquarters office, which was located inside the Watergate hotel. The five burglars broke in to place bugs (microphones and phone taps) in the office so that Nixon could spy on his opponents.

Nixon was never actually in the hotel. In fact, of all the people implicated in the burglary, Nixon was one of the last people revealed to have been involved.

If you want more info on the burglary, I recommend the movie "All The President's Men," starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman.

Don't watch the movie "Nixon," because lots of that movie was fiction, and not at all reliable for historic reference.
