I am spritual, not religious. Having taken some courses in philosophy and world religions I have learned a few things...

Religions are like different vehicles--to the same end--although for some strange reason, people feel the need to convert or put down other's, why?

There have been more people killed in the name of religion than in all wars--combined.

If religions were like magazines, wouldn't you want to read the others before subscribing to one only...just because that is the one your family subscribes to? How would you know it is the "right one"?

There is no right one.

If you need a doctrine to believe in, that's fine. As long as you don't let your specific religious beliefs override your common sense and belief in the golden rule, it's all good.

As long as you believe in being good to others and leaving this world a better place than you found it, that is what matters.

I have been going through this debate myself. In my opinion, religions can change a lot of things, Man wrote the bible so it gives me a distrust in what i read. Lots of religions want power and anything that will stand in their way they will hide or destroy. I admit i would like to live my life by the bible but i believe that the word of god has been altered in a lot of ways over time to give these religious organizations more power or protection. I believe that if i trust god he will show me the way on my own. I will not go by what a corporation mass produced book says. God will give me the answers and i will trust him on it.

Would you be opposed to the following?

a group gets together and decides that they are going to take Jesus teachings and beliefs and put them into practice... and in studying Jesus' teachings and beliefs they find that He believed the Old Testament, so they accept it as the Word of God. They also find that Christ's followers were given authority to communicate and explain His message on earth, so they accept the New Testament texts as the Word of God too.

Then these people (who also don't like the power and authority that religion has had in the past) get together and begin meeting on a regular basis to study the Word of God.

They commit themselves to the teachings and beliefs of Jesus, which they find to include forgiveness of sins through faith in Him. "I am the way, the truth and the life no one comes to the father except through me". So, though this is contrary to political correctness, they believe it.

Would you be opposed to the "organizing" of this group, not for the sake of power, but solely for the sake of study, worship, fellowship, and service?

What you have here is an example of the church I fellowship at.
