Router won't stay connected. I am using a Hawking router and Comcast cable modem. My Mac is on the 2nd floor, router on the 1st. Every 3 days or so, my laptop will stop connecting to the internet. The Airport card will detect the network, but my browser won't open. I had a friend look into it and he is thinking that the router is fine, bu the signal level is too weak. The level does fluctuate greatly and he is thinking that whenever it drops extremely low, my router loses its configuration for the laptop or something like that. I go re-configure the router and can get Net access again. I tried just restarting the router or unplugging it for a minute, but that doesn' work. Does this sound like the signal level or should I try a different router? Also, if it is just a signal level problem, is there a way to strenghten the signal?

move the laptop closer

at least temporarily, and see if the problem persists.

And you might want to post this to the computer forum.

What type of router bit are you using?

Bosch makes an awesome 1/2" router-- 2-1/2 HP.

get better signal

you could use a sawsall to cut through the ceiling to let more signal in.. JK. i use wireless here. i live off grid and the nearest internet is about a mile away.

i am using an off the shelf router, linksys. the difference is that i use a small dish. it is on the roof of a friend down the road. i can sit in the house with my laptop and i am getting a good signal, not great, but about 2/3 rds scale most of the time.

if you were to take one of the antennas off the router and put a real antenna wired down to floor you are on and stick it on a tin can lid, ought to fix your problem. go on ebay and search WiFi antenna or 802.11B or 802.11G.. should find some stuff.
