run this up your flagpole i need to display a U.S. and state flag in front of our business. i need to sink a pole. the pole above ground will be roughly 18 feet high. how deep should i set the pole in the ground. I have 24 ft of pole to work with, so there is 6 ft available. now i know i don't need to drop it 6 ft into the ground but whats a reasonable depth to support flagpole in high wind conditions with that height? thx forum folk

2 ft is ridiculous

I would suggest at least 4' . We have know idea what your soil/wind conditions are so 6' may not be too unrealistic .

At least 3 feet, but remember...

wider is better. If you dug an 8 inch deep hole about 42" in diameter and set the flagpole in concrete in the center of this the pole wouldn't go anywhere, probably not even in a hurricane. There just isn't enough of a wind load on the flag pole.

I installed 3 last year on a job and actually went smaller than this but still exceeded the manufacturers instructions.

In Wiscnsin

were we have frost to 4 feet some years, the public utility puts their poles 4 feet plus 10% of the total height.

4 + (10% * 24 feet ) = 6.4 feet.
