SLR Camera - Film? Hi, I have an opporunity to buy a Nikon F4 and several Nikkor lenses for $550. Should I buy a film camera or save up and digital SLR? I have only a point and shoot 35mm camera now. Thanks!

I'd go for the F4.

Digital just doesn't do it for me. The only reason I use digital is to take photos of finished projects for the website. The rest goes on film.

Totally subjective

If you're a purist purist you'd go with film. There isn't a digital in the world today, for any amount of money, that can do what a good film camera can do.

That said, the difference is only important to maybe that 1% of the population.

In terms of convenience, digital wins hands down.

The question is, what's important to you? I still own a couple of film camera bodies, but I never use them!

Digital - but with changeable lenses

Film camera bodies are falling down in price almost hourly.

Absolutly dont buy it...

The camera body is not important.

The most important part of any SLR camera is the LENS...

Dont bother buying some expensive camera if you plan on putting a cheap lens on it.

How many photos do you plan on taking? Hundreds per month? Or just when you go on vacation?

If your new to photography, my suggestion is for you to buy the most expensive lens you can afford, then find a used cheap camera to slap it on after that.

Figure it this way..

In 2 years, your camera body will be worth 50% of its value new.

In 6 years, your lens will be worth 80% of its value new. (if you take proper care of it)

Good luck

email B&H used dept & ask what they'd pay for it

What condition is the F4 in?

Lots of pros still like the F4 becaue it's got good manual functions and can operate without batteries if need be.

More importantly, what lenses and what condition are they in.
