Open Source or not for my data/photohosting site My question: I'm trying to have a site built that has more or less the same functionality as a "dating" website: (users can upload text and/or photos/subscribers can do advanced searches based on user upload demographics/keywords) the most user friendly of the developers I've met with both use Microsoft based ASP etc./not linux or other open source. I will need some component software like profanity filters etc. I don't have very deep pockets, would I be better off trying to go with an open source developer to avoid licensing costs, or would this not be worth it. I'm trying to get unbiased opinions--I know people have very strong opinions about this. I may be using the terminology incorrectly, for that I apoligize. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

doesn't make that much difference

For your purposes the project price will likely be pretty much the same. I develop in both php/mysql (open source)and .Net/MSSQL (Microsoft) and my time is worth $XX/hour either way.

Most proprietary technologies are going to cost more to host because the software that runs them is expensive, but that shouldn't have much impact on how much a developer charges.

The only discounts you get these days with using a free platform are the hosting costs and the possibility that you'll get really lucky and find a good developer you freelances and can charge much less because they don't have to pay for lots of expensive software.

sourceforge might already have what you need

go to

sourceforge.net/search/

type in "dating" and you'll see some already built open source software. might be what you need. you'll also see lots of hits with the word "updating" - ignore those and look for the others.

you might need to hire someone to customize, or maybe not. don't go for anything that runs on a windoze server though. its not as scaleable, it costs too much, and is nowhere near as stable as linux. don't bother with asp, its a waste of your time and especially your money!
