I recently opened an account with BOOM Securities in Hong Kong, which provides access to exchanges in multiple countries including Australia (full list of markets).
The process to open and fund an account is reasonably straightforward, especially if you already have an account with HSBC HK.
Note: There is a fee of HKD 200 to open an account with BOOM, although they often run specials where this fee is waived. See their fees and charges page for more information.
Go to https://baby.boom.com.hk/en/service_support/open_account/ to apply for a new account.
You have a number of options as to how you want to submit your application. I recommend applying online. Click the "Apply Online" link.
Click on the button labeled "Start New Application". This will open the application form in a new window.
The application form itself is fairly standard. Provide account credentials, name, address, email address, etc.
Note that you will need to provide your passport information as part of the application process.
Once you've completed the online application, print it out and sign it.
What happens next depends on how you want to fund your account:
If you have a bank account in Hong Kong that you'd like to draw from to fund your BOOM account, include a check for the amount of at least HKD 10,000 (a little shy of USD 1300) made payable to:
Monex Boom Securities (H.K.) Limited
Note: the signature on your check must match the signature on your application form!
If you pay via check this way, you do not need to have a witness sign the application.
If you will be drawing funds from a different account, you will need to have a witness sign the application where indicated.
According to BOOM's instructions for supporting documents:
Acceptable witness can be a BOOM employee, a Notary Public, an officer from embassy, or a financial / legal professional (such as Bank Manager, Certified Public Accountant, Practicing Lawyer, Chartered Secretary, etc.).
Include a notarized copy of the photo page of your passport. Similarly to opening an account with HSBC, you will need to write on the copy, "I have seen the original document and I certify that this is a complete and accurate copy of the original," and then sign it in the presence of the notary.
Tip: According to BOOM's instructions for supporting documents, you don't have to notarize the copy of your passport if you are including a personal check with your application. I recommend getting it done anyway just to be safe, though.
Include a copy of a single utility bill, bank statement or some other proof of residence dated within the last 3 months.
Tip: You don't have to have an address in Hong Kong; you just have to prove that you live where you say you live.
Make sure you've got everything, and put it in an envelope:
Signed Application Form
Notarized Passport Copy
Proof of Residence
Personal Check (optional)
Write "DO NOT BEND" on the front and mail it off to:
Monex Boom Securities (H.K.) Limited
25/F, AIA Tower
183 Electric Road
North Point, Hong Kong
You should receive an email within a couple of business days letting you know whether your application was approved. If your application is approved, the next step is to fund your account.
If you sent a check with your application, then your account is already funded!
If you did not send a check with your application, you will need to arrange a funds transfer. See the funds deposit page for instructions on how to do this.
At this point, your account is set up, and you can log in, but you can't submit trading orders just yet. You will need a trading keycode which will be sent to you in the mail.
Once you've received your trading keycode, you are all set and ready to start trading!
