is money received from a crowdfunding site taxable??

someone asked in another forum, so i thought i'd ask here. i'd think that if it were a kickstarter type thing, that you would record the "donations" as income and the expenses of the business, and just by the nature, it is likely close to break even or a loss at first..... but something like gofundme? I almost think these are just gifts? like remember the guy that got like $1m because he stopped a shooter somewhere. is that taxable?

Potentially
If there is no quid pro quo (exchange or promise of exchange for value), then it could be characterized as a gift. For example, there are people who crowdfund for medical procedures where the only promised return is a mental feeling.

However, if it's crowdfunding where you're promised something (access to a product or service) in return, then it's most likely income.
