The role of Eris in the Iliad was that she, in way, was the cause of the whole war. In the beginning, Eris was not invited to the wedding of Pelues and Thetis (parent's of Achilles), which was why she threw a golden apple inscribed "to the fairest" into the banquet hall. This was claimed by all of the goddesses who were present at the wedding, but the choice came down to Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. It was because of her revenge that the whole feud of the three goddesses started, thus in a way, inciting the Trojan war.
